 You
will be visiting a dream that became a reality of Peggy
and Claude's. The site of Green River Vineyards and Bed
& Breakfast is land where Indians roamed and battles
were fought. Claude's grandfather, from Germany, used to
experiment making wine for his own consumption many years
ago which peaked Claude's interest. That, plus a love of
growing and working the land, became a passion for Peggy
and Claude and sparked their own interest to start a vineyard.
After much searching of North Carolina for the right land
for the vineyard it was only appropriate to pick this county
because Polk county has a history deep in grape growing
well before the first World War. That, plus the rolling
land, thermal climate, beautiful views and mountains,
were another plus. Our vineyard was planted by the help
of family and friends on April 2003 and our home was built
that same year with the intention of starting a Bed and
Breakfast business.
The varieties of grapes planted here are:
Chardonnay, Merlot, Chambourcin, Viognier, Barbera, Muscadine, Scuppernong and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Ask them any questions about the vineyard because they love
to talk about it! We like to refer to the grapes as "Fruit of the Vine, Work of Human Hands".
The vineyard and Bed & Breakfast were
appropriately named as it is located on one of the most
pristine and adventurous rivers, the Green River, a river
that runs from the Western NC
mountains to the foothills.
We are looking forward to the future when
our wines can be enjoyed by our guests in our winery. Currently
there are several wineries
in North Carolina and several in close proximity where we sell our grapes. There guests
can sample local wines.
